Alpacas are very unique animals raised for their soft and luxurious fibre ranging in 22 different colors. Ancient Incan civilizations cherished these gentle creatures for their fine fleece which was often reserved for Incan royalty. Alpacas are sheared annually and produce about 5 to 8 punds of fleece per year. There are thriving fibre markets in Canada and the United States ranging from home spinners to elite fashion designers. Because of the small size of the alpaca, they can be handled by almost anybody. They use community dung piles so they are quite easy to clean up after and their beans have been wonderful fertilizer for our trees. Since they are so clean you can have 7 to 10 animals per acre which makes alpacas ideal for small acreages.

Alpacas are an investment you can watch grow with every cria season. Crias are typically delivered during 10 AM and 2 PM which generally is the nicest part of the day. If the weather is less than ideal the dam will hold off the impending birth until the next suitable day. The birthing process, as a general rule, does not require any assistance but we always make sure we are around just in case a problem does arise.

No matter what your income, alpaca ownership is a very possible and rewarding endeavor for young families to retired couples. We began with nothing but the desire for something new. We had no existing barn, hay, or fence so we had a lot of work to get ready for our new interest. Dave has been a full time grain farmer for more than a decade so we had room to expand our yard to accommodate alpacas. Our alpaca farm was designed exclusively for alpacas and has worked very well for us.

We will continue to share our knowledge with you our valued customers. We look forward to meeting you and showing you what we have to offer in the exciting new world of alpaca ownership. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have regarding alpacas.
